Practical support for parents who need answers, direction, and a plan.
Parenting a child or adolescent through emotional, behavioral, developmental, or mental health concerns can leave families with a lot of information, and still very little clarity about what to actually do at home.
At Dr. Vaccaro Counseling Group, we believe good care goes beyond teaching skills to a child in a therapy session. Parents and families should also understand what is happening, why certain patterns may be continuing, and how they can respond in ways that support meaningful change.
Our Parent & Family Consultation services provide focused education, support, and practical guidance for families who need help navigating a specific concern.
Your child does not need to become a therapy client at our practice for you to work with us.
In fact, your child may already have a therapist, psychiatrist, treatment program, school team, or other professionals involved. Or they may not need individual therapy at all. Sometimes it is the parents who need a place to ask questions, better understand what they are seeing, and develop a plan for how to move forward.
Consultation can be as focused as a single meeting or continue for a limited number of sessions based on what your family needs.
It is common for parents to hear recommendations such as “set better boundaries,” “don't accommodate the anxiety,” “work on executive functioning,” or “keep an eye on these behaviors.”
Knowing how to actually do those things within your own family can be much harder.
Our consultation sessions are designed to help bridge that gap.
Rather than simply telling parents what they should do, we help families understand the reasoning behind recommendations and translate them into realistic strategies for everyday life.
Depending on your family's needs, consultation may involve education about a diagnosis or behavior, identifying patterns occurring at home, discussing appropriate expectations and boundaries, developing specific responses to difficult situations, creating safety or transition plans, or helping parents determine what level of support may be appropriate next.
Executive functioning challenges can easily become interpreted as laziness, lack of motivation, carelessness, or defiance.
Parents may find themselves constantly reminding, correcting, negotiating, or taking over responsibilities simply to get things done. The goal is not simply to make a child “more compliant,” but to understand where skills are breaking down and create supports that help the child become increasingly independent.
Consultation can help families better understand difficulties with:
Parents may understand their child's diagnosis while still having questions about what it means for everyday family life & what to do next. We help families understand the individual child rather than relying solely on a diagnostic label.
Consultation can focus on areas such as:
Parents naturally want to make their child feel better. With anxiety and OCD, however, some well-intentioned responses can unintentionally reinforce the anxiety cycle. Parents can then develop responses that remain supportive and compassionate without strengthening the behaviors that keep anxiety going.
Families can learn how to recognize patterns involving:
Eating disorders can leave parents unsure of what they should monitor, what they should say, when they should intervene, and when a behavior requires additional professional attention.
Parent consultation can provide education and support around:
When getting to school becomes a daily battle, families can quickly find themselves caught between wanting to reduce their child's distress and knowing that continued avoidance may make returning even harder.
Consultation may focus on understanding what is driving the avoidance, identifying patterns that may unintentionally reinforce staying home, establishing realistic expectations, creating a return-to-school plan, and determining when collaboration with the school or other providers may be helpful.
Not every difficult family situation represents a diagnosis. Parents may simply feel that something within the family is no longer working.
Consultation can address concerns involving:
Receiving a diagnosis can provide answers while simultaneously creating an entirely new set of questions.
Parents often leave an evaluation knowing that their child has ADHD, autism, anxiety, OCD, or a learning disorder but still wondering:
What does this actually mean for our child?
We can help parents better understand evaluation findings, recognize how a diagnosis may show up in everyday life, and determine which recommendations are most important to prioritize at home, at school, and with other providers.
Families can become stuck when an adolescent or young adult is struggling to move forward but parents are unsure when to provide support and when to step back. The goal is to help families move away from repeated conflict and toward a clearer, more sustainable plan.
Consultation may address:
A child or adolescent may spend weeks or months receiving intensive support through inpatient hospitalization, residential treatment, partial hospitalization (PHP), intensive outpatient treatment (IOP), or another higher level of care.
Then they come home.
Families may receive discharge recommendations and follow-up appointments, but the transition back into everyday life can still feel overwhelming.
Parents may wonder:
What should we be monitoring?
How much independence should we give back?
What happens if symptoms start returning?
How should we respond when our child refuses to follow the plan?
Are we being too restrictive—or not restrictive enough?
How do we get back to being a family instead of constantly monitoring treatment?
Our Higher Level of Care Transition Support is specifically designed to help families navigate this period.
We can work with parents and families to better understand discharge recommendations and translate them into daily life.
Support may include:
Your child may continue working with their established therapist, psychiatrist, dietitian, physician, school, treatment program, or other specialists.
Our roles can be different.
We can focus specifically on helping you and your family understand the plan, implement recommendations at home, navigate difficult situations, and feel more prepared for the transition.
This support can also be helpful when there is a temporary gap between discharge and the start of outpatient services.
When a higher level of care or emergency intervention is clinically necessary, consultation is not a substitute for those services.
We want families to know this clearly:
You can come to us as a parent even if your child does not need another therapist.
Your child may already have an excellent therapist.
They may be receiving services through another practice.
They may have recently completed treatment.
They may not want to participate in therapy.
Or the primary need may simply be for the adults in the family to receive education and guidance.
We are happy to work alongside the professionals already supporting your child when appropriate and with the necessary consent.
Sometimes adding another therapist is not what a family needs.
Sometimes parents simply need someone who can understand the larger picture, answer their questions, and help them figure out what to do next.
Parent & Family Consultation is intentionally flexible. Not every concern requires an ongoing therapeutic relationship.
A focused consultation for parents who have a specific concern, situation, or decision they would like professional guidance around.
This may be a good fit when you want to better understand a behavior, talk through a parenting situation, receive education about a diagnosis, or develop a plan for a particular concern.
A limited series of sessions for concerns that require more than one conversation but may not require ongoing therapy.
These sessions allow families to develop strategies, try them at home, return to discuss what is and is not working, and adjust the plan as needed.
Focused support for families preparing for or navigating a child's return home following inpatient, residential, PHP, IOP, or other intensive treatment.
Consultation can focus on education, family expectations, safety and response planning, implementation of discharge recommendations, and coordination with existing providers when appropriate.
Short-term consultation for families who are between services, waiting to establish care with another provider, or who need additional family support alongside treatment being provided elsewhere.
The purpose is not necessarily to transfer care. We are happy to help families get through a specific period and transition back to their established providers or next level of support.
Families are often managing recommendations from multiple directions—schools, therapists, physicians, psychiatrists, treatment programs, evaluations, and their own instincts as parents.
Our goal is to help bring those pieces together.
Whether you need one conversation, several focused sessions, support following a higher level of care, or simply a professional perspective on a difficult family situation, we want parents to have somewhere they can turn for thoughtful, practical guidance.
Parent & Family Consultation at Dr. Vaccaro Counseling Group provides education, support, and direction without requiring your family to commit to services you may not need.
Contact Dr. Vaccaro Counseling Group to tell us a little about what your family is navigating. We can help determine whether a one-time consultation, short-term support, transition support, or another service would be the best fit.
No. Parents can schedule consultation even when their child is not receiving individual therapy through Dr. Vaccaro Counseling Group.
That's completely fine. We can provide parent education and family support without replacing your child's existing therapist. When collaboration would be helpful, we can communicate with other providers with appropriate authorization.
Not necessarily. Many consultations can be completed with parents alone. Whether involving your child would be beneficial can be discussed based on the purpose of consultation and your family's circumstances.
No. One of the purposes of this service is to provide families with access to professional guidance without automatically creating a long-term treatment commitment.
Some families may need one meeting. Others may benefit from several sessions. If ongoing therapy becomes appropriate, we can discuss recommendations at that time.
Yes. Higher Level of Care Transition Support is specifically available for families navigating the transition back home. When appropriate, we can also collaborate with the child's established treatment providers to help families understand and implement recommendations.
In many situations, yes. Short-term bridge support may be appropriate when families are waiting to establish ongoing services and need education or family guidance in the meantime. Consultation is not intended to replace emergency services or a clinically necessary level of care.
No. Consultation is available for families navigating concerns involving children, adolescents, and young adults. The focus of the work changes depending on the developmental stage and the family's needs.
You do not need to determine that before contacting us. Part of consultation can involve helping your family understand the concern, identify priorities, and determine what type of support makes the most sense.
